Flight to Chernobyl in Flight Simulator 2020

How to fly to the site of the nuclear disaster from 1986?

For historical information only, do not use for navigation or aviation purposes!

On 26 April 1986 a reactor block exploded in the Chernobyl nuclear power station and released large quantities of radioactive material. The surrounding places like the city of Prypyat were evacuated, the area around the reactor has been a restricted area since. The flight should take place with thoughts of the many human fates connected with the disaster.

In addition to the facilities of the former nuclear power plant, there is another interesting facility: About 10 km south of the reactor block, there is the huge antenna system of a Soviet radar, which was able to detect targets beyond the horizon (Over-the-horizon radar, OTH). I added this point into the flight. To make navigation easier, the route from the city of Prypyat first leads back to the reactor and then follows the road to the OTH radar.

There are no airfields in the immediate vicinity of Chernobyl, so I let the flight start and end in Kiev, the capital of the Ukraine. This way you will get also an impression of the megacity on the Dnepr river.

Flight route

  • Departure from Kyiv-Zhuliany (UKKK)
  • Flight over the city of Kiev
  • Radio beacon Lyutizh
  • along the Dniepr and Kiev Reservoir to the north
  • to the northwest up the river Prypyat
  • Nuclear power plant and city of Prypyat
  • OTH Radar
  • Flight to the south
  • Landing at the airport Kiev-Hostomel / Gostomel (UKKM)

  • UKKK: N502406 E0302707
  • Lyutizh NDB 1145 "LT": N514212 E0302342
  • Prypjat to Dnepr: N511049 E0303008
  • City of Tschernobyl: N511613 E0301311
  • Power plant: N512320 E0300556
  • City of Prypjat: N512422 E0300326
  • OTH radar: N511820 E0300356
  • Hostomel NDB 534 "LC" N503902 E0300921
  • Hostomel airport UKKM: N503609 E0301131

Route length and flight duration

The length of the route along the waypoints is 119 nautical miles, which is 220 km. At a speed of 110 knots the nominal flight time is 1 hour and 6 minutes. However, this does not include take-off and landing and sightseeing flights at the individual stations, so that the effective duration is definitely longer.

To be considered:

  • Control zone Kiev Zhuliany
  • Control zone Kiev Sviatoshyn
  • Restricted areas Chernobyl UK(P)-1 und UK(P)-27
  • Control zone Kiev-Hostomel

Alternate aerodromes

With alternative sites, the situation in the immediate vicinity of Chernobyl looks poor. Smaller airfields are located in Belarus, about 25 km away. Larger airfields are near Chernihiv / Chernigov, but these are about 80 km away, as far as Kiev.

Maps and charts

The AIP and VFR charts for Ukraine are subject to a fee. Therefore I only used SkyVector and the TPC chart E-3C (1996). This is sufficient, because the route is easy to navigate.

Impressions from the flight

In the standard scenery of Flight Simulator 2020 all topographic elements are very well displayed, so that you get a good impression of the area during the flight. There are restrictions for specific objects. Churches and other places of interest in Kiev are shown rather symbolically, the same applies to the nuclear power plant and the OTH radar. This is of course due to the fact that the objects are computer generated, otherwise it would not be possible to realize the infinite variety of the Flight Simulator. Therefore, the flight will give you rather an experience of the area in its entirety - but this alone is absolutely worthwhile.
